The walls carrying fascinationg old stories
Clarion Collection Hotel Valdemars has a long and dramatic history. The building dates back to 1901, when it was erected as a luxury apartment building in Art Nouveau style. In the 1930s, the house belonged to the family of Latvia’s first president. Like all other private properties, it was confiscated during the Soviet occupation and one of its uses was as a residence for KGB generals. To save their lives, the family was forced to flee to Sweden during World War II. When Latvia regained its independence in 1991, the building was returned to its former Swedish-Latvian owners, who could begin transforming it into the charming and intimate hotel it is today.
