Steinkjer doesn't have that many options and this hotel is literally a minute from the train station. I stayed here two nights in October for a conference and the rooms were clean, the staff friendly and the breakfast very decent. It is just a very good, very competent establishment. I would have given it a "4-above average" if I had not experienced a very incompetent dinner service. That said, I would stay here again and I would recommend it to anyone on their way to or through Steinkjer.

Went to the hotel for a conference. Nice, very clean rooms, friendly and professional staff all over, very good food at breakfast and dinner. For early leave, breakfast to go was possible. A recommendation in Steinkjer! Very close to the train station, university, city center - and just a view steps into the stunning surroundings!

Stayed for 9 nights on business, and got a room in the old wing. The room was nothing special, it had the original bathroom from when the hotel was built in the 70s with depressing colours, floor heating which was either on or off (scorching hot or ice cold), and a vintage sink fixture from the eighties which actually seemed to worked pretty well. The bathroom amenities are as sad as in any Nordic Choice hotel; two plastic cups and one wall mounted soap dispenser (partially broken, in this case) with cheap-smelling soap. Bathroom lighting consisted of a single fluorescent tube in a casing with a yellowish colour above the mirror, giving the whole room a cave-like feel. The room itself was of a fairly good size, and seemed to have been renovated recently. Furniture, TV and bed looked fairly new. Bed was comfy, but pillows somewhat lumpy. Even thought the furniture was quite new and the walls seemed freshly painted, the room felt very old and tired, and had that "old" smell to it. I visit 10-20 hotels yearly for business and holiday, both in Norway and elsewhere, in all kinds of budgets. The level of service and attention at the Quality Grand Steinkjer is quite simply the best I've experienced in Norway. Staff are friendly, attentive and polite and makes you feel very welcome both at the front desk or in the restaurant. The restaurant was another pleasant surprise, I had never in my wildest dreams thought I'd find this kind of quality at a hotel in such a small place as Steinkjer. I worked very late for the most part of my stay, and didn't want a full dinner just before going to bed. The waiter happily arranged for us to have whatever we wanted from the lunch menu. They also have a wide selection of bottled craft beer. Breakfast was excellent, on par with what you'd find at the best hotels in Norway. Coffee was good, except for that morning when it was served in large pots instead of from the dispenser. The excellent service and quality of food and beverage outweighs the dull-feeling rooms, I'd definitely return if I ever need somewhere to sleep in Steinkjer again.
