A wonderful place to stay

Wednesday, July 01, 2015, Decorah, Iowa, 356pennyl

The breakfast buffet was absolutely the best we had in Norway. The staff were very helpful and willing to go the extra mile to make our stay special. We will recommend this location to other friends…

Clarion congress - Trondheim - Scandinavian high rating but globally doesn't cut the mustard,

Hotel room was a 'Superior Double' I was staying in this on a single use basis and founwd the room to be very small and claustrophobic. Large TV on the wall did not have many of the services attached to it so the media side of things appeared to be 'work in progress' . Good free WiFi though. The bathroom was a smelly dank wetroom which made me feel very uncomfortable and wary of spending any time in there - only thing available was a soap - even the most basic two star hotels eslsewhere manage to do better than this. The (apparently) high specification restaurant (Astrum Grill and Raw Bar) produced very good quality food but even with the English Menu was a very perplexing experiencing in selecting from Hobson's Choice - option of about four items as I recall which I kept reading and re-reading and they still did not make sense. The options were trying for fine-dining but this was pretentious, limited and quite frankly very annoying and incredibly over-the-top expensive which means I will have to eat eslewhere as it exceeds my global maximum permitted allowance. No other option locally though from what I could see - definitely a very dead part of town. Very little choice and what was on offer was on a 'take a chance and do the dance' basis. The starter was nice (spot the content, fine dining example of massive surface area and a very lonely centrepiece of food that was three mouthfulls and gone whilst also being overly pretentious with many of the items garnishing the dish being unnecessary and essentially inedible (a five by eight millimeter leaf frm something nondescript which some thought was a good idea to decorate a plate with for some unknown reason). Main dish was greate (rib-eye and calf's tongue on a this or that bed of overcomplicated something or other - too much going on basically but it tasted nice) no option on how the meat was to be cooked and it was essentially a blue-centre - potatoes were inedible and a massive let-down. They were saggy and possessing an unfamiliar method of presentation and were generally revolting. Had the cheese board and the cheeses were very nice. Waiter took trouble to tell me about the various things on the plate - a couple of which were unnecessarily fussy and petentious like the starter but the cheeses, especially the local blue one, were very nice indeed. The flatbread (would not recommend if you have dentures and do not want an expensive dental bill ) was actually as expected but insufficient in volume given the amount of cheese presented - an imbalance. Caramalised honey was present in the middle of the slate plate and I was warned about it possibly sticking so I left it well alone - what is the point in that? Back to the room - best thing are the most amazing pillows. Other than that - very cramped and lacking. Need to globalise more as no UHT milk or drinkable tea (only earl grey, green tea or some fruity thing were on offer - none of the beakfast or every-day tea despite the fact it was Twinings) . Cannot make proper tea with creamer powder - and Nescafe Gold Blend! probably the worst instant coffee going - what a let down - at least Dowe Egberts!. Only enough for two coffees and no UHT milk - wooden stirrers too which is a bit downmarket. Massive marbelled reception with 95% wasted space and nothing interesting to fill it. Understocked and untended and unattended bar - no atmosphere, over the top and pointless with a very typically Scandinavian minimalist approach which is fine but in the big picture absolutely not what you want from a top-notch hotel which should be all about detail. No fried/poached eggs available for breakfast - boiled only. Semi-skimmed milk seems not to be available for some reason. Nice and very courteous people as expected. Just not a lot on offer and of course a very early (children's bedtime - sub 7 years as my 9 year old doesn't sleep much before that) shutdown for everything so this is no good if you are the nocturnal type. Would love to see the nearyby Rockheim (Rock Museum) but like everythig else, opening/closing times ae a bit of a mystery so this appears to be permanently closed - disappointing as I would have wanted to take a look at that. I will have to see what the next two days have to offer.

Nice, newly build hotel near the port, indoor waterpark and Rockheim (Rock museum). The hotel accomodates big, nice rooms and volumous common areas. It is situated next to the seaside and the bar/restaurant on the rooftop provides a breathtaking view to the Trondheimsfjord and the city in the opposite direction. The breakfast is excellent with chefs making your omelet with ingridients chosen by you. The hotel is not 'down town', but a 5 minutes walk takes you to the city centre.
