I went to the FIS Cross Country World Cup finals in Falun in mid-March: unfortunately, all Falun hotels were fully booked with all the teams staying there and had I to look in Borlänge instead. I chose the Quality Hotel Galaxen based on reviews here.
Overall, I think it's 4/5 rating at TripAdvisor is fair. Its location is 8-10 minutes from the train station on foot and the town center is only a bridge away, but being in a residential area, its surroundings were very quiet. The staff was nice, especially the lady at check-in despite the late hour
The room was nothing to write home about: the decoration style is a bit dated and not exactly fancy, but it had space and was clean. There were a couple of nice touches though: there was chocolate to mix with hot water on top of the traditional coffee and tea with the kettle, as well as a couple of small chocolate squares as welcome gifts, together with a couple of water bottles. The towels were very good. And they had free internet in the room, always a good thing in my book, as I tend to use it extensively
I had one big issue though with my room: it was opposite the lifts and I could hear it loudly in my room. It was bad enough that I almost went to the reception to ask if they had other rooms. However, it was late and I was very tired, and thankfully, there was no noise from midnight to 6 AM, which is what I needed to sleep. In the end, I decided against changing, as I figured I would be in Falun most of the day anyway and as long as it was silent during the night, I could still get what I needed in terms of sleep
The great suprise, on the other hand, was breakfast buffet, which was included in the price: pretty much everything you could wish for, they had, and I couldn't think of a better way to start an active day!
Next time I go in the region for the cross-country world cup (or nordic world championships, as they'll take place there in 2015), I'll try to stay in Falun proper - Borlänge is close, but still a 30 minutes transfer from Borlänge station to Lugnet stadium by bus. If I have to stay in Borlänge instead, I wouldn't mind staying again in at the Quality Hotel Galaxen, which is quite good, especially for the price, but would definitely request a room away from the lift then!
