Work at Nordic Choice Hotels

Management trainee

Every year, we look for new talent for our Management Trainee Programme. Most of them are recruited in-house, because we believe we find the biggest talents amongst our own. Would you like to take the leap? We prefer to recruit from our own ranks.

We have several success stories to tell. Meet some of our former trainees who now hold management positions with us:

Liza Lyberg

Liza had never worked for Nordic Choice before. She was chosen to become a MT at Clarion Collection in 2009. Today, she is a hotel manager in Nyköping.

What were your expectations of the Nordic Choice Management Trainee Programme, and did it live up to them?

I pictured an intensive year, where I would develop my skills regarding all stages of running a hotel. I would get to know Nordic Choice, and, above all, develop my skills within areas where I lacked experience. My goal was to get ready to take on a management position by the time I had finished the programme. I was well received and made many contacts that turned out to be invaluable. I achieved my goal of gaining the skills that would allow me to take on a management position.

What made you apply, even though you had never worked with Nordic Choice before?

Nordic Choice is an incredibly exciting work place. The fact that it is a proactive company, always at the forefront, was essential. I was ready to take the leap from my position as a department head in a smaller hotel chain. Having read about the different chains within Nordic Choice, the decision was easy.

Do you have any advice to others who are thinking of applying?

Just do it! The programme means you will have a turbulent year, it demands flexibility. In return, you will build an incredible foundation on which to develop a career in the hotel and tourism business.

In your view, what is unique about Nordic Choice?

The fact that Nordic Choice is proactive and at the forefront of social and environmental development. I thrive in such surroundings. In addition, I believe it is a major advantage that Nordic Choice has something for everybody; from business hotels to large resorts. As a Nordic Choice trainee there are ample opportunities to develop.

Fredrik Lindvik

Fredrik was a Management Trainee at Quality Hotels in 2011. When he applied, he worked at a Clarion Collection Hotel in Oslo. Today, he works as a hotel manager at the newly opened Quality Hotel Expo at Fornebu.

What were your expectations to the Nordic Choice Management Trainee Programme, and did it live up to them?

I wanted to learn more about running a hotel and to develop my skills. I did learn a lot about running hotels as Management Trainee. However, what gave me the most insight was to experience how the different hotels communicate and work to improve routines and quality. These are areas we learn little about sitting at a school desk.

What do people need to think about before applying?

Do you really want to run hotels? As a Management Trainee you make a huge choice and it is vital to be 100 % sure about your short term and long term goals, the consequences of your choice and last, but not least, the opportunities you might get along the way.

If you become a Management Trainee, it is important that you take on the ensuing responsibilities and contribute to your own learning and development. Every day is like a job interview when you are a Management Trainee.

Do you have any advice to others who consider applying?

Talk to you ‘mentor’ or superior about what you are thinking and get some good advice along the way, make a plan and stick to it 100 % when you have made a commitment. If you have questions, talk to other current or former Management Trainees.

Pernilla Anderson

Pernilla was a Management Trainee in 2006. She worked at a Quality hotel in Gothenburg and became a Management Trainee in the Quality chain. After her MT training, she has been working both as a hotel manager and a general manager, as well as being central to the opening of a hotel. Today, she is General Manager at Comfort Hotel Runway.

What do people need to think about before applying?

Set clear targets. You develop the trainee programme in cooperation with your mentor. It is important that you are 100 % motivated, flexible and are capable of handling a big workload.

Why did you apply for the Management Trainee Programme?

I have worked 17 years in the hotel business. To me, this was an opportunity to increase my knowledge about running a hotel and to develop as a manager at the same time. I saw many career opportunities in such a large and expanding chain as Nordic Choice Hotels.

What was your best experience with the programme?

To be able to meet so many energetic, courageous and enthusiastic ‘Nordic Choice people’! I now have a fantastic network, that I often make use of. However, the best experience was being able to contribute to the opening of Quality Hotel Ulstein.

Do you have any advice to others who consider applying?

Set clear targets, be flexible and ‘give it your all’ where it will pay off.
