Stayed at Grand Royal Hotel for a weekend, visting family and celebrating a birthday. The restaurant "Linken" at the 7th floor, offered a very pleasant three course meal, a tasty red wine and dessert. Excellent! The breakfast gave also a very good start of the day, offering good and healthy bread, eggs and bacon and fruits and other breakfast "goodies"!

First we got a room on 6th floor. They have a problem with too much sound from the ventilation. They know this, so when we asked, it was not a problem to move to 4th floor. But why put us in 6th floor in the first place? The room has pretty good standard. Norwegian television didn't work, though. Wi-fi was very unstabil. The breakfast is not ineresting at all. Very standard.

Quality? Avoid Half Board Deal

We arrived from Kiruna very late (circa 8 pm instead of circa lunchtime as expected)as train was cancelled. No problem our tour operator had booked us a half-board deal for the two nights we were staying. We were told to present voucher in adjacent pub ( note not in the hotel's restaurant). We presented the voucher and it seemed to cause confusion with girl behind the bar and she said she would go to see what the kitchen could do. 10 mins later cutlery arrived but we had seen no menu and had not been told what our mystery meal was. At last irritated by the lack of communication we demanded to know what was being cooked. We were told we had to have lamb sausages and mash. (No discussion of any starter!!). When my wife went to complain to reception they grudgingly agreed they could substitute a piece of chicken and would throw in some vegetables. We refused and asked for a refund on the half board deal - this was flatly refused. The receptionist then said the chef "wished to work with us" ( note there had been a marked lack of a chef to this point - just a young barmaid "cooking " our dinner). We asked to be told how much we could spend on the meal - we would then pick from the pub menu and make up any cost shortfall. Apparently we " didn't understand the half board concept" and this offer was also refused. The receptionist then tried to get us to tell her what we wished to eat - in our opinion we quite reasonably asked to see a menu so we could choose. This again was flatly refused. At a total impasse now we walked away and went to a restaurant around the corner(which we also did on the second night). Basically then this hotel has kept our money and not provided a service!! A piece of advice to the hotel - get your management to Camp Rippan in Kiruna and look at what a real half board deal is I.e. 3 courses of fine dining - granted each course was specified but the staff bent over backwards if there was something we didn't fancy and the replacement dishes were all of a very high quality. The receptionist was probably very happy with her performance - keeping our money and saving the hotel tuppence halfpenny in food. In reality she lost the hotel our custom in the bar and main lounge over two nights. Breakfast in this hotel was also not of a high standard, cooked food particularly looked generally unappetising. Room standard was no better than a UK Travel Lodge I.e. definitely at the low end of the market. Definitely by a wide margin the worst hotel we stayed in during our holiday in Sweden and Norway.

Excellent stay n cosy room. Nice internal decoration too. Good spread for the breakfast buffet just a bit under staff to help clear up the used plates. Stayed on the top most level and had a good view far out. Won't have landed in this hotel if I'm well prepared because it cost 1450kr per night.

We passed through Narvik, in early July, and by chance found Quality Hotel Grand Royal, to stay for one night. In generally drab "downtown" of Narvik, it was a relieve to find a hotel with spacious tastefully decorated hotel rooms and a clean comfortable beds. If one has to stay in Narvik, this is a highly recommended hotel to pick. Breakfast is great, too. Very helpful and nice receptionists.
