All the good things about this hotel have been said elsewhere. We stayed for just one night as part of the Cosmos/Archers tour and it was one of the best hotels of the fortnight. It is a shame that we couldn't stay longer, we arrived in the afternoon and had to be off early the next morning. The only negative thing to say is that they had no black tea- just fruit teas. So keep a couple of bags of your favourite tea with you- we had this problem at another hotel as well! We will have good memories of the Straand after our holiday. Cosmos should make this a 2 night stop.

A coach-trip resort hotel.

I stayed for one night, on a month-long road trip around Scandinavia. The hotel is a large resort, set back from the lake. It also has a resort area on the lakeside. The public rooms are very pleasant, especially those in the older wooden part of the hotel..........lovely country house feel! There is a piano bar with resident pianist (who I enjoyed). The dining room is huge, which is just as well as there doesn't appear to be anywhere else to eat in the immediate vicinity. Evening meal was buffet-style (which I usually avoid!!!!!!!!) but as there was nothing else available, I took the buffet and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I was also impressed with the fact that the staff had reserved a table for us. (I guess they knew we would either be eating there or no-where.) The staff were lovely!! The bedroom, which was on the ground floor, overlooking a grassy wooded area, was comfortable and the sleep quality good, BUT I did not like the mustard-coloured breezeblock walls and dated decor. Most depressing! Would I stay there again?..........Probably not!

Nice hotel in a beautiful old Norwegian hospitality tradition!

We stayed for one night as we were travelling throughout the country quite a bit. The old fashion hotel has a beautiful front view with the Nisser lake and mountains skyline on the background. The lobby and hotel's various lounges are beautiful art pieces and a reminder of old time blissful serenity. We were even welcomed by a piano solo concerto when we arrived! The breakfast was good and plentiful, staff warm and helpful, and the wi-fi connection very good indeed - I could watch an important football game impeccably :) The hotel was originally built in 1864 by the same Straand family still owning it now, so tradition is the key word, with old, beautiful furniture spread in the lobby and all the numerous lounges around. By visiting only these rooms is like a trip back in time, just lovely! Otherwise the hotel was expanded in stages so the rooms can be different. I could not help myself noticing the old, if not aging furniture with kind of stiff mattresses and old pillows which made my back hurt in the morning. The bright side is that the hotel is categorized as a resort too and you have lots of utilities available to enjoy: swimming pool, sauna, gym, tennis court, playgrounds with trampolines, etc. for kids, boats and canoes to rent, or you can choose to go on a trip with M/S Fram on the Nisser lake and Vråvatn. A good choice is to take a trip on theTelemark canal, a true amazing experience with its unique locks system ( http://www.visittelemark.com/telemarkskanalen ). The location of the hotel gives actually plenty of opportunities for trips in the vicinity, so I would recommend warmly staying for a few days there if you come in the area. Enjoy!

My fifth stay at this hotel, which offers good rooms at an affordable price. Great internet connection without password, quite good food at dinner (buffet), great deserts, very good breakfast, and a very nice and a very accomodating and service minded staff. Quiet rooms, good sleep. I got a reserved dinner and breakfast table in the restaurant without asking for it! It's an old hotel, but still well kept. The hotel has good beds, has a minibar frigde in the room, but no minibar content, since everthing in this chain of hotels are moved to a small kiosk near the reception area, but rather small and old TV's with few channels. But who cares with a great internet connection!? Rooms are without ceiling lights, sp quite dark in the evening. A possiblity to swich on a ceiling light would have made my working experience more pleasant. The table light does not give enough light for working with papers.
