Pricy but worth it if you're really keen

Stayed here for a night pre-Christmas as part of a week-long trip to Swedish Lapland. It may sound like an obvious thing to say but unless you're REALLY sold on the idea of sleeping in an ice cave/igloo don't even consider staying the night. Save yourself a LOT of money and get a day ticket instead: you will still be able to go into every single room and suite to have a good look around/take some photos, plus get a drink in the icebar before those areas become guest only in the evening. If like us though you are sold on the idea of sleeping there, then it is a really unique experience and thoroughly recommended. Definitely not the most comfortable "bed" you will ever sleep in but given its essentially just wooden slats on a block of ice that shouldn't be a surprise. The regular rooms also don't have a door on them just a curtain you pull across, but this is not the kind of place where you have people wandering the corridors at all times of the night so it's more than adequate to provide a little privacy. We booked a 'regular' ice room as opposed to a suite but somehow still ended up with our own private cubicle to get changed in before going to sleep. Most of the rooms of the same type only seemed to have a locker which meant people staying in those had to use the communal changing area, so I have no idea how this works. Maybe it's luck of the draw? In any instance if you need a reminder that this isn't a 5-star hotel then the changing areas will do that for you: definitely a 'council leisure centre' feel to them! All perfectly functional though and they do the job, so I guess that's all that matters. The buffet breakfast included at the restaurant was fine, nothing spectacular but good enough to set you up for the day. We pre-booked the "icemenu" option for our evening meal which was really good. Pricy like everything else is at this place but all part of the experience so for us it was worth the cost. Can't write this review without mentioning how nice the staff were as well. Unfortunately, there were more than a few obnoxious guests there at the same time as us that the staff had to endure. There are many reasons I don't work in hospitality and putting up with entitled, self-important ar*eholes with more money than manners is definitely 1 of them. However the staff showed the patience of saints when dealing with these cretins which is more than I wanted to do! Can't comment on the excursions/activities as we didn't partake having already done similar thing elsewhere before we arrived. What I would say though is if you are planning on staying a couple of nights, you're going to want to look into doing at least 1 of these, as there isn't an awful lot else to do in Jukkasjarvi. We took a walk along to the church and the sami centre next door to it which was good to fill a couple of hours but that's it, and unless you're fond of racking up a bill at the bar be prepared to spend a lot of time sitting in the welcome centre of an evening psyching yourself up for going to bed! Overall, we really enjoyed our experience here although I'm glad we only stayed for 1 night. It is definitely one of the most unique hotel stays you will ever have so if you're really (really) keen and prepared to pay the price I would say it's worth it.

We spent one night at this hotel. The perfect winter destination for those that love snow. Beautiful location and the rooms made of ice are just...WOW!! Exceptional art, it really worths it to visit them, and even sleep in them and of course to take a cold drink in the ice bar. Full of activities, a frozen lake to walk on and a restaurant with very delicious food. If lucky the Northern lights can been seen!!! With few words, a lifetime’s experience.

Wonderful location, and the ice Chambers are really worth seeing. Activities are great as well, especially the night ride on snowmobile. However, the restaurant and the rooms are not up to the rest of the hotel. When it comes to “hot” rooms, they are rudimentary and lack th confort standard that you could expect from such an hotel. In particular, the sound isolation of the rooms is close to nonexistent. The restaurant, on the other and, also needs improvements. Yes, the food is great but the service is not. For one, the well-known ice hotel menu needs to be preordered when you book a table, and no one tells you about it. On top of that, the service in general is mediocre (lack of reactivity, some rookie-mistakes...). Overall, these downfalls kind of hurt the the experience as a whole, which really has the potential to be great.

A few weeks ago I traveled up north with some friends to go hunting for the northern lights. I knew there was an ice hotel in the area, but was not sure it was an experience for me. One of my friends convinced me to give it a shot and we spent a night there. I have to say I was wrong. The hotel was a tremendous and unique experience from beginning to end. Each and every room was better than the previous one, you truly get lost among the ice sculptures and art and forget about the outside world for a little bit. The service was also stellar. I saw the same energy across all hotel staff whether it was 2 PM or 2 AM. Big shout out to an employee called Pauline who was kind enough to show my friends and I around the hotel and tell us about how to enjoy the beautiful town of Kiruna... like at 2am. There is a difference between answering a customers question and taking an interest in a customers question, she did the latter. Perhaps one of the toughest parts of the pandemic for all of us has been the lack of a sense of normality, the ice hotel give me some of that back in the Covid safe way, thank you.

A stay in the icehotel is definitely an overwhelming experience. Make sure to dress warm and then just enjoy. All of it and everything that little Jukkasjärvi with its surroundings has to offer. A visit to the Icehotel can be compared to a museum visit. All rooms are beautiful pieces of art work. A drink in the icebar a must. Meals in the restaurants and nearby Homestead are great. And the nature surrounding this all is magnificient. You can even spot a few gentle reindeer and feed them. Perhaps see the Nordic ligths if you are lucky.
